Looking at pedestrian walking signs can be very helpful when you are trying to find out which country you are in.
Most of the countries in Europe have similar signs, but they differ in the number of pedestrian walk stripes in the signs. The map below shows how many stripes each country show in their signs.
Finding a sign with 5 stripes might not look so helpful, but it can help if you are in Finland or Latvia, as their neighboring countries don't have 5 stripes.
The more stripes, the better! If there are 7 stripes, you are in Switzerland. If there are 8 stripes, you are either in Spain or Andorra.
In the UK and in Ireland there isn't one single universal walking sign for pedestrians. Instead you will find some black and white short poles on both sides of the street.
