License Plates in the US and Canada

Unlike in Europe, if you are in the US or in Canada, it can be a nightmare to rely on license plates to find out where you are. Some states or provinces even have 3 or more different license plate designs, with different colors!

But there is still hope that license plates can help you define which state you are: many states and provinces don't require a front license plate!

Whenever you try to region-guess inside the US or Canada, check the front of the cars. You can narrow down your guess to about half of the US and Canada areas.

Lucky states for license plates: Although many stands don't give that information away from the license plates, New York and New Jersey are great states to recognize even a blurred license plate. One of the most popular New York license plate background is orange, and most of license plates in New Jersey are bright yellow.
